TED talk: Celebrating Failure

This TED talk about "The Unexpected Benefit of Celebrating Failure" revealed the secret to success which is, according to Google X employee Astro Teller, pairing unchecked optimism with enthusiastic skepticism and embracing the probability of failure when trying to make one's dreams a reality.

Astro pointed out that in order for people to be successful in achieving their goals in a work place, the environment must be one where failure is accepted. He mentioned that where he works, his employees receive bonuses and high fives when their projects fail rather than being scolded or punished. His employees aren't afraid to try new things or make big strides because they don't have to worry about possible criticisms from their superiors and peers.

This concept makes sense and can easily translate to an academic setting. When thinking about my future as an educator or coach, I think that this concept is going to be important to keep in mind. If I create a classroom environment where kids aren't punished with bad grades for not understanding a concept or getting a problem wrong, then kids won't be afraid to share their answers and participate more in class. Having this positive environment will give kids the opportunity to try new things that they otherwise might not have had the guts to try. It will give kids the confidence to step out of their comfort zones and broaden their knowledge.

  1. You have a nice vision of how this concept could play out in the classroom. How might it impact your coaching?

  2. Hi Allie!
Great post! Right from the beginning I saw that you were engaged in the topic at hand. Even from the first sentence (of the second paragraph), I already agreed with what you were saying. Creating an environment where failure is accepted is so important for students. I consider this to be the first step to building a relationship with students. Loved where you took the conversation at the end!

  3. Hi Allie,
I can tell that you enjoyed the topic of this Ted Talk. I agree that educators should create a safe environment for students to be able to fail. Failing should not be viewed as a negative experience instead it should be seen as a stepping stone for comfort zones within the classroom.

  4. Hi Allie,
I totally agree with what you said about class participation. If we create an environment that encourages students to ask even the simplest of questions, they won't be afraid to ask for help when it comes to more complicated topics. Thanks for sharing!
